ThumbTranslator Team

Practical guidance for translating thumbnail and product-image text while protecting meaning, layout, and review quality.

Localize Etsy listing images by organizing the files yourself. Inventory every text-bearing image, preserve the original, make one reviewed version for one named market, label the files clearly, upload the approved image manually, and inspect the listing afterward.

Do not assume that a marketplace will select a different image because a buyer uses another language or market. Verify the behavior of your own listing and check current official Etsy guidance before uploading. This workflow does not imply an Etsy integration, partnership, automatic localization, or automatic upload.

Audit text-bearing listing images

Create one row for each listing image, including images that appear to have no text. Record the listing or product reference, source filename, visible order, source language, intended market, and whether the file contains words, numbers, labels, or claims. Add a screenshot of the current listing if your approved workflow allows it.

Classify the embedded text. Ordinary promotional copy may be flexible, while names, prices, quantities, dimensions, materials, care instructions, warnings, or other factual statements need a reliable source. Mark any sensitive region so it cannot be changed merely to make a translation fit.

Preserve the original file and the best editable source available to your team. Give every asset a stable internal ID. A listing can contain several similar images, so a reviewer needs more than a description such as "the blue one" to identify the upload candidate.

Check current Etsy media requirements

Before editing, open the current official marketplace guidance that applies to your account and listing. Confirm the permitted file and content requirements through that source. Record the URL or document, the date checked, and the team member who checked it. Do not rely on generic dimensions, limits, or interface instructions without confirming that they apply to the account and listing.

Next, transcribe every visible text region from the source image into a copy sheet. Connect each region to its asset ID. Ask the product owner to approve names, numbers, offers, and claims before translation. If the source contains an outdated fact or an ambiguous promise, fix the source-of-truth problem first.

Choose one named target market. A language alone may not answer questions about word choice, measurements, offers, or audience expectations. The brief should state who will review the target wording and who owns any market-specific product facts.

Translate and review variants

Keep the manual workflow small and traceable:

  1. Duplicate the approved source rather than editing it in place.
  2. Translate the copy for the named market.
  3. Have a fluent reviewer approve meaning, spelling, punctuation, names, numbers, and claims.
  4. Place the approved wording into the duplicate image. Treat tool-generated output as a candidate, not a publication decision.
  5. Compare the result with the original for missing text and unexpected visual changes.
  6. Inspect the file at full size and at a realistic listing display size.
  7. Save it under a market-specific filename linked to the asset ID.

If the copy does not fit, do not simply remove a qualifier or shrink the type until it cannot be read. Ask the copy owner whether the source can be shortened without changing meaning. Send sensitive wording back to the appropriate reviewer instead of improvising inside the design.

Organize files by market

Store the original, working file, reviewed copy, and final export in a folder structure your team can understand. Keep a market mapping sheet with the asset ID, listing reference, intended image position, language, market, final filename, reviewers, approval date, and status.

Before upload, confirm that the exact final file opens correctly, the original is preserved, every text region has a disposition, and all required reviewers have signed off. Check the market code, listing reference, filename, product facts, language, layout, file identity, and current official requirements. Keep the asset on hold if any answer is missing.

Upload and verify manually

Follow current official Etsy guidance and use the controls available in the seller account. Compare the selected listing reference with the mapping sheet, choose the approved file, and verify the preview and intended position before saving when those checks are available.

After the upload, inspect the listing in the views available to your team. Confirm that the intended image appears, the text is readable, the crop is acceptable, and nearby listing copy does not contradict the graphic. Check the product and market mapping again. A correct file can still be attached to the wrong listing or placed in the wrong order.

Log the date, operator, listing, asset ID, filename, reviewer, result, and any rollback. If the result is wrong, restore the previous approved image through the same manual workflow. Correct the mapping or source process before working through more files.

File organization is the control that holds this process together. It lets a small team prepare language variants without pretending that the marketplace will map, review, or approve those images automatically.
